From Software’s supposedly final (say it ain’t so!) foray into the Souls universe is a passionate love letter to fans of the series and newcomers won’t be disappointed either. Number three is without a doubt the easiest Souls game to control. Players can dodge on a dime and Dark Souls lll incorporates some of Bloodborne’s impeccable sense of speed into the mix. It seems that’s not all From Software and Miyazaki pulled from Bloodborne. Some of the setting design and even a few enemies carry over into the new game. That isn’t to say the game is derivative in any sense of the word but some gamers may feel a sneaky sense of familiarity to their surroundings (those who played Bloodborne, anyway).
All of the Souls tropes are here safe and sound. Some mechanics such as Estus Flask consumption have been streamlined to include magic restoration flasks at the cost of the depletion of a chosen number of Estus Flasks. Armor now no longer requires Titanite (yes!!!) and weapons are the main focus with a few additional elements thrown in. Players can still expect beautiful weapons and armor as well as character designs, level designs, and bosses. From Software does little to shake up the formula too much (weapon arts are a nice new addition) but they don’t need to with such a winning combination of gameplay and design elements with that punishing difficulty still present. If more Souls sounds good do not pass this up.
